Providence Health & Services Laboratory Assistant 2 in Seaside, Oregon

Description:

Providence is calling a Laboratory Assistant 2 (0.9 FTE, Rotating/Variable) to Providence Seaside Hospital in Seaside, OR.

We are seeking a Laboratory Assistant 2 who will be responsible for the accurate and timely receiving, processing, and labeling of laboratory specimens, and the appropriate handling and/or disbursement of laboratory data and patient results. Support personnel work with acute-care and outpatient caregivers, vendors, consultants, and other Laboratory Services staff in performing their duty. Additionally, this position is responsible for registering outpatient laboratory encounters obtaining complex demographic, insurance, and medical information. Successful candidates will maintain up to date knowledge and competency on required registration functions. Lab Assistant utilize multiple computer applications in order to complete patient encounters.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

Laboratory Compliance:

  • Demonstrates competency in compliance by carrying out personal responsibilities required by the PH&S Laboratory Compliance Plan, including annual training.

  • Maintains knowledge of numerous complex dynamic compliance requirements.

  • Ensures compliance is met with various Federal, State and other regulatory bodies which includes, but is not limited to CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services), CAP, TJC (The Joint Commission), CLIA, EMTALA, COBRA and HIPPA.

Technical Skills:

  • Understands specimen collection and handling requirements, general laboratory workflow and basic medical terminology.

  • Accurately follows policies and procedures for specimen handling and processing, referrals, reporting, filing, and/or recording patient results.

  • Uses basic computer skills to access appropriate HIS/LIS information.

  • Recognizes problems and identifies discrepancies, specimen integrity issues and is able to troubleshoot, resolve and document variances.

  • Verifies patient information and specimen requirements.

  • Documents and accurately receives, processes and distributes specimens to assure proper preservation of samples and timely analysis and reporting of results.

  • Exhibits excellent telephone etiquette and Service Excellence skills, utilizing key words at key times.

Quality Assessment:

  • Promptly and accurately documents basic specimen, patient, or client problems using the appropriate forms, logs, etc.

  • Completes written variances to ensure continuous quality improvement.

  • Participates in department QA projects as requested or required.

Productivity:

  • Completes assigned tasks, meeting section turn-around-times.

Business Knowledge:

  • Understands and supports departmental goals.

  • Responds to basic laboratory questions with accurate and complete information and refers questions appropriately.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • 2 years Healthcare or related field experience, or a combination of applicable experience and education.

  • Clerical or client services experience.

  • Experience with State and Federal and other regulatory Compliance Regulations including Medicare Secondary Payor (MSP), EMTALA, ABN, HIPPA.

  • Providence Seaside: AHA-BLS required within 30 days of hire.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 2 years college courses in biological sciences, anatomy, and medical terminology.

  • Associate's Degree courses in biological sciences, anatomy, and medical terminology.

  • Bachelor's Degree courses in biological sciences, anatomy, and medical terminology.

  • Courses in biological sciences, anatomy, and medical terminology or equivalent education/experience.

  • Industry-related experience in a high volume, acute care setting.

  • 2 years Phlebotomy, medical assisting, research, clinical laboratory experience, or certification.

  • Job experience in specimen collection, specimen preparation and equipment operation, pneumatic tubes systems and other laboratory equipment.

  • Certification from an approved government agency or nationally recognized professional organization (ASCP, NCA, etc.).
