Providence Health & Services Underwriter I in Portland, Oregon


Providence St. Joseph Health is calling an Underwriter I to our location in Portland, OR.

The Underwriter I will provide ongoing rating, enrollment and analytical services by utilizing demographics, plan design, funding arrangement, claims history and other information to determine acceptable rate and contract terms for assigned accounts. Meets with and presents to external constituents (consultants, brokers) in support of Sales activities.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Actively support and incorporate mission into daily activities as outlined in the Department Mission Practicum.

  • Demonstrate positive interactions with the public, and positive interpersonal relations in dealing with fellow employees, supervisors, and other department employees, so that productivity and positive employee relations are maximized.

  • Under management direction and based upon established criteria, process assigned renewal accounts, and underwrite new accounts to support Plan revenue and profitability goals.

  • Comply with regulatory requirements and Providence Health System policies related to confidentiality of information.

  • Maintain group underwriting file documentation in a manner supportive of plan policy and regulatory requirements.

  • Communicate with Sales to provide information for underwriting and rating for existing or new accounts.

  • Coordinate the enrollment of accounts with Sales and Operations personnel.

  • Provide support for underwriting responses to Requests for Information (RFI) and Request for Proposal (RFP).

  • Compile monthly performance reports for large group production activity.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Associate's Degreeor 3 years of equivalent work experience as an Analyst.

  • Experience operating a personal computer in a Windows environment utilizing Microsoft tools (Excel and Word).

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Experience in health insurance Operations or Sales.

  • Knowledge of health insurance concepts.
