Providence Health & Services RN Quality Information Coordinator - Abstractor - Quality Management and Medical Staff Services in Portland, Oregon


Providence is calling a RN Quality Information Coordinator - Abstractor to the Quality Management and Medical Staff Services Department at Groth Building in Portland, OR. This is a part-time (0.6 FTE), day shift position.

We are seeking a RN Quality Information Coordinator - Abstractor - Quality Management And Medical Staff Services that will work independently to review and analyze data abstraction and analysis for a variety of internal and external quality and/or patient safety initiatives. RN Coordinator/Abstractors are required to understand complex data specifications and methodologies underlying initiatives. RN Coordinator/Abstractors must possess a significant understanding of the care processes and related documentation and coding processes for each of the clinical focus areas worked on. Additionally, RN coordinator/abstractors must understand the information and workflow systems and structures that support the healthcare practices and outcomes being measured.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Apply all concepts of the nursing process, such as identification of disease, facilitation of healing, health promotion, illness presentation and patient care delivery to each task and patient review

  • Accurate, timely data abstraction for support of the CMS Hospital Inpatient and Outpatient Quality Reporting Program measures, TJC Core Measures, and/or other Clinical Quality and Patient Safety measures

  • Identification of potentially non-compliant cases requiring additional review

  • Application, interpretation, and clarification of data definitions and data abstraction specifications and guidelines

  • Interaction and detailed review of abstracted data with Clinical Program, Quality Management, and System-level personnel to provide education about data quality and continuous quality improvement and/or missed opportunity review

  • Communication, on-going education and collaboration with providers in support of ongoing improvement efforts

  • Maintaining complete and detailed knowledge of measure specifications using documentation in conjunction with the online resources. Keeping constantly abreast of changes in data definitions and measure specifications

  • Interacting with other abstractors and contributing to the knowledge/experiences of other abstractors

  • Attending meetings and joining in teleconferences as needed

  • Participating in improvement efforts and serving on project teams as a team member or consultant. Proactively identifying risks to success with in focus areas being measured and communicating to appropriate personnel

  • Collaboration with quality improvement team members and other key stakeholders in data accuracy and improvement efforts. Serving as an expert resource for key stakeholders

  • Demonstrate understanding and utilizes tones, tools and behaviors that promote patient safety in a highly reliable organization

  • Being constantly aware of confidentiality of data and the need to maintain that confidentiality

  • Generate report on a monthly and quarterly basis to track progress and communicate issues, problems, or successes


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

  • Two (2) years in Acute care experience

  • Demonstrated clinical experience related to a wide variety of patient populations and care delivery models

  • knowledge of clinical practices, care processes, and procedures

  • specialized knowledge of Medical Records and Health Information Management practices and documentation, including familiarity with patient charts, disease classification and coding

  • understanding healthcare quality management and improvement strategies and techniques

  • Competency with extraction of information from health records, organization and management of information, and analysis of information

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • Data abstraction experience

  • Knowledge of Joint Commission Core Measures and CMS Hospital Inpatient and Outpatient Quality Reporting Program

  • Familiarity with statistical process control techniques and continuous quality improvement

  • Competency with extraction of information from health records, organization and management of information, and analysis of information

  • Familiarity with statistical process control techniques and continuous quality improvement
