Providence Health & Services Regional Chief Nursing Officer – Oregon Region in Portland, Oregon



The RCNO is an inspirational mission-driven leader who possesses the organizational and political skills to successfully lead the transformation of nursing and interdisciplinary care delivery across all settings of care within the region. The RCNO is an exemplary role model of the highest professional nursing standards and conduct, is the “voice” and advocate for nursing and interdisciplinary care strategy and operational initiatives and performs all duties in a manner that reflects the Providence mission and values.

This position has overall accountability for nursing and interdisciplinary leadership, strategic direction, quality and outcomes of care throughout a Providence geographic region. The RCNO establishes and communicates a vision and direction for patient-centered and evidence-based care delivery in an integrated and team-based context. In partnership with the Regional Chief Medical Officer, the RCNO leads in the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the quality of clinical care across the full clinical care continuum. The position is responsible for driving a service-oriented culture focused on superior patient experience, employee engagement, quality, patient safety, and operational efficiency. The RCNO sets and enforces standards for professional nursing practice including; leadership development, educational requirements, and workforce goals and targets.

The RCNO is responsible for establishing a culture of accountability and stewardship, and for leading in removal of unnecessary clinical and practice standard variation through regional alignment of care delivery and operational practices where appropriate. The position advocates for strategic patient care priorities with internal and external constituents and stakeholders to ensure optimal operating effectiveness, market positioning, and quality outcomes.

The RCNO collaborates closely with PH&S system and regional colleagues to achieve system and regional quality outcomes, and priority strategic clinical initiatives. The position serves as a member of the regional executive team, regional nursing leadership team, and the system Office of the Chief Nursing Officer.

  • Leads the (re)design of delivery models to achieve patient safety, quality outcomes and flawless handovers.

  • Applies healthcare funding, economics, accounting, and regulatory principles.

  • Represents nursing and interdisciplinary services to senior leadership teams and governing boards.

  • Promotes patient and family centered, evidence-based care models.

  • Ensures robust patient safety and risk management programs and actions.

  • Demonstrates stewardship of human and financial resources.

  • Formulates effective strategies with labor relations partners.

  • Utilizes and leverages technology to enhance outcomes and professional practice.



  • Bachelors or Master’s Degree in nursing from accredited school of nursing; Master’s Degree in nursing or relevant field, Doctoral degree in relevant field preferred.

  • Current, active, and unencumbered RN license in the primary state of employment.

  • Specialty certification (CENP, NEA-BC)

  • Competent, respected, and experienced nurse leader with a minimum of 10 years of progressive executive leadership in nursing and complex health care delivery systems.

  • Relevant nursing leadership and/or health care executive external industry certification strongly preferred.

  • Previous experience with shared leadership structure is required.

  • Previous experience managing multiple ministries (regional role) is preferred.

  • Previous experience as a chief nursing officer is required.
