Description:
Providence is calling a Phlebotomist 2 to the Clinical Laboratory at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland , OR.
(0.6 FTE, Nights, 10:00pm-6:30am Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
We are seeking a Phlebotomist 2 who will be responsible for the accurate and timely pre-analytical functions of patient identification, blood and body fluid specimen collection and specimen labeling. The phlebotomist will provide support to multiple regional laboratory personnel and will be integral in maintaining the integrity of patient specimens in order to provide accurate and timely patient care.
This high-visibility position requires excellent communication, Service Excellence, and good judgment that meets or exceeds the expectations of patients, visitors, physicians and Providence Health System staff. The incumbent must possess astute attention to detail in accurately identifying patients, appropriate specimen collection tools and preserving the integrity of the specimen.
The incumbent must be competent in the assessment, treatment or care of patients of all ages including neonate, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric. Consequently, the incumbent must be competent in the interpretation of a patient's behavior, including an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process. The treatment of patients should be individualized and should reflect an understanding of the development needs and scope of treatment needs for each patient.
Knowledge of patient registration, order entry, specimen processing and the appropriate handling and/or disbursement of laboratory data and patient results may be required. The incumbent must maintain up-to-date knowledge of and competency with numerous regulatory body compliance and safety regulations. Job complexity is evidenced by the performance of multiple tasks, use of various computer applications and requires the ability to think independently and make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
The incumbent must understand Providence Health & Services and the Portland Service Area Laboratory goals and strategies.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Laboratory Compliance:
Demonstrate competency required by the PH&S Laboratory Compliance Plan, including annual training
Maintain knowledge of numerous complex compliance requirements
Ensure compliance with various regulatory bodies including, but not limited to, CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services), CAP, Joint Commission, CLIA, EMTALA, and HIPAA
Technical Skills:
Correctly and accurately identifies patients, label specimens and enters data into computer according to federal, state and local regulations and policies
Perform venipuncture and capillary collection on patients of all ages with minimal patient discomfort or repeat punctures due to inadequate specimens, quantity or quality
Act as a resource for difficult collections
Routine, ASAP, timed, and STAT collections are performed in a timely manner according to policy
Possess advanced technical and theoretical knowledge of section policies and/or procedures
Independently apply computer skills to access appropriate HIS/LIS information
Enter physician orders as appropriate for patient services:
Independently identify discrepancies, specimen integrity issues and is able to troubleshoot, resolve and document variances
Verify patient demographic and insurance information and accurately inputs all required information into Epic system
Document and accurately receive, process and distribute specimens to assure proper preservation of sample and timely analysis and reporting of results
Exhibit excellent Service Excellence skills utilizing key words at key times
Quality Assessment:
Promptly and accurately documents complex specimen, patient, or client problems using the appropriate forms, logs, etc.
Recognize order variances, cancel appropriately and provide proper documentation
Initiate written variances (including self-reporting) to ensure continuous quality improvement
Recognize areas for improvement within the department, seeks out and develops quality improvement projects

Qualifications:
Required qualifications for this position includes:
Successful completion of a nationally accredited phlebotomy or medical assistant training program
Demonstrate experience with State and Federal and other regulatory Compliance regulations including Medicare Secondary Payor (MSP), EMTALA, ABN, HIPPA.
One (1) year phlebotomy related experience AND Certification / Registry (PBT, etc.) from a government agency or nationally recognized organization (e.g. ASCP, NCA)
Preferred qualifications for this position includes:
Certification -OR- Registry (PBT, etc.) from a government agency or nationally recognized organization (eg. ASCP, NCA)
Previous registrar experience
Three (3) years phlebotomy related experience. Certification or Registry (PBT, etc.) from a government agency -OR- nationally recognized organization (e.g. ASCP, NCA)
