Providence Health & Services Executive Director, Pre-Service Operations in Portland, Oregon



The Executive Director Pre-Service Operations is responsible for the high level strategic vision and ensuring all programs and activities are standard, efficient, cost effective and aligned to market activity. Responsible for the financial clearance of accounts valued at $3 billion in net revenue for 51 hospitals across seven states with annual point of service collections of approximately $50 million. The Executive Director is responsible for leading transformational change, the health of the pre-service revenue cycle and patient financial journey. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall quality and patient experience of scheduling departments managed by revenue cycle, the accuracy and timeliness of financial clearance of scheduled and unscheduled acute care services and price estimates in a multi-state environment. The Executive Director works closely with internal and external customers to include Revenue Cycle Senior Leadership, Chief Financial Officers, Ministry Executives, Physician Leaders and patient advocates to develop and oversee the execution of strategic plans in the areas of operational excellence, business automation, innovation and customer service. Responsible for budget, cost, productivity and overall pre-service performance.


  • Executive Director is responsible for developing and executing the strategic vision and oversight of the patient experience, quality and efficiency as it relates to scheduling services, pre-service functions, estimates and point of service collections to improve cash acceleration and patient yield. Responsible for KPIs including accurate and efficient estimates, timely and accurate authorization verification, denials and CWOs.

  • Oversee financial clearance enterprise-wide for acute care services ensuring that authorizations/notice of admission denials and controllable write-offs are minimized, trends are monitored and financial targets are met. Monitor trends, oversees corrective action as needed by pre-service and coordinates with Executive Director Strategic Business Partner as appropriate.

  • Responsible for developing and overseeing the execution of enterprise pre-pay strategies that enhance the patient experience, improve collections and/or accelerate cash. Stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, business automation and technology solutions. Collaborate with peers, revenue cycle leaders and ministry leaders on cross-cutting initiatives. Lead the strategic vision for patient self-service tools.

  • Develop business relationships and have regular communications with ministry and regional executives in the market. Collaborate on initiatives that impact patient experience, caregiver engagement and proactively communicate to ministry and market leaders.

  • Develop an ancillary and surgery scheduling services strategic plan for the enterprise. Develop an enterprise Quality and Education team that supports multiple hospital information systems.

  • Oversee a Pre-Service point of service program that meets or exceeds KPI targets and provides for a positive patient experience. Employ self-service tools that ease the way for patients. Develop an enterprise price estimates team that is responsible for price transparency tools, generating estimates, answer questions and posting content on the Providence websites for patient education and ease of use.



Required experience and education for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant area of expertise such as business, finance, health care administration; or equivalent educ/experience

  • At least 10 years of progressive leadership experience in revenue cycle.

  • Proven detailed understanding of revenue cycle concepts and issues

  • Ability to effectively communicate and build effective working relationships

Preferred experience and education for this position include:

  • Master's Degree

  • At least 10 years of experience of financial clearance

  • At least 5 years of leadership experience in a matrixed, multi-facility, multi-state healthcare system. Experience in a managed care environment.
