Providence Health & Services Dental Assistant EFDA- Oncology Dental Services in Portland, Oregon

Providence is calling a Dental Assistant EFDA - Oncology Dental Services (1.0 FTE, Days) to the Franz Clinic in Portland, OR.

We are seeking a Dental Assistant EFDA - Oncology Dental Services who will be responsible for working chair side with the dentists, in the clinical lab, and the front office (administrative). This position is responsible for maintaining dental equipment, set up of instrument trays and operatories for dental treatment, schedule treatment appointments, aides in transporting patients into the dental operatory, manages dental records and supplies, exposing x-rays, instructs patients and families on proper oral hygiene and post-treatment care and performs procedures that ensure instrument and operatory infection control.

Oncology Dental Services:

  • Working in an inpatient and outpatient setting for medically complex patients and families preparing for cancer treatment or cardiovascular surgery.

  • Adapting and responding effectively to rapidly changing operational issues and priorities within the dental clinic.

  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining the ability to communicate with patients, families, dentists, and staff.

  • Ability to handle urgent needs as they arise.

Patient Population Served: Adult: medically complex and hospitalized patients

The dental assistant must be able to approach all patients with respect, understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional/psychosocial aspects involved in significant medical diagnoses. The treatment of patients should be individualized and should reflect an understanding of the critical health concerns of each patient.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Preparation of instrument trays

  • Dental instrument cleaning and sterilization

  • Perform dental operatory sterilization

  • Instruct patients (and parents) on proper oral hygiene and post-treatment care

  • Manage the dental office infection control plan to meet OSHA, CDC and standards

  • Conduct daily opening and closing procedures for the clinical area

  • Provide daily, weekly, monthly and yearly maintenance of dental equipment

  • Routine digital x-ray processing

  • Polish the coronal surfaces of teeth with a brush or rubber cup as part of oral prophylaxis to remove stains if a licensed dentist or dental hygienist has determined the teeth are free of calculus

  • Under general supervision, when the dentist is not available and the patient is in discomfort, an EFDA may re-cement a temporary crown or re-cement a permanent crown with temporary cement for a patient of record providing that the patient is rescheduled for follow-up care by a licensed dentist as soon as is reasonably appropriate

  • Assisting the dentist in an ambulatory care or hospital setting and working closely with the hospital staff

  • Maintain dental records and dental supply control

  • Schedule and confirm appointments; handle patient reception and process patient registration

  • Expose and manipulate digital intraoral radiographs taken in clinic, bedside and in the operating room as well as digital panoramic radiographs and high Resolution 3D (dental cone beam CT)

  • Assist with in clinic and intra-operative procedures following policies and procedures of hospital clinic, inpatient units, and surgical operating rooms/suites.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Certificate in Dental Assisting from an accredited program

  • EFDA certification including Radiologic Proficiency Certification issued by DANB or a state certificate of Radiological Proficiency by OBD

  • Three (3) years experience in adult dental practice or general dental practice

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • Two (2) years experience in different aspects of insurance billing, patient billing and working with insurance companies to resolve complex insurance issues

  • Experience working with special needs and medically complex adults or in hospital denistry

  • Experience with Dentrix dental practice management program and digital imaging software
