Providence Health & Services CMO, Laboratory Services in Portland, Oregon
The CMO of Laboratory Services is the clinical leader for our system laboratory and pathology services. In this role, the individual will collaborate with the Group Vice President of the Laboratories in a dyad to develop long-term strategic direction related to laboratory service delivery, technology and professional group strategies and models. He/she is guided by a deep understanding of the healthcare/medical environment, and the underlying associated economics of the environment and the organization as well as the larger system initiatives.
The CMO will collaborate with the GVP to develop a system of laboratories across PSJH optimizing structures and functions to achieve best in class quality, financial and operational performance. Included in this effort will be the development of a strong system lab management team and a long-term strategic plan for the system lab across all modalities, including hospitals, clinics, core labs, POCT and pathology.
A key driver to the success of lab optimization is the relationship and activities of local pathology groups as they engage with the histology and clinical labs and perform as CLIA Medical Directors. The CMO will evaluate the services and the related contracts of the various pathology groups and will collaborate with the GVP and others to start formulating a system strategy for providing pathology services.
The System Lab CMO establishes and maintains strong relationships with the Regional Lab Medical Directors who are members of the System Laboratory Executive Council and with select other pathologists who are representative members of the groups providing pathology services across the system.
The job can be located in Renton, WA or Portland, OR.
The CMO of Laboratory Services will be responsible for the following functions:
Works collaboratively with System Laboratory GVP to fully develop a long term system lab strategy to include pathology services; potential partnerships. Analyze current pathology contracts for opportunities to standardize, simplify, consolidate and to consider different models such as employed, outsourced, etc.
Enable development of system wide laboratory test utilization management model through installed, readily available IT systems and programs.
Promotes system wide standardization of a quality POCT program in support of the Ambulatory Care strategy.
Collaborates with Lab GVP and other leaders on prioritizing lab capital and IT projects.
Works across pathology groups to develop clinical lab and pathology best practices in order to support standard LIS builds.
Participates/collaborates in the financial management of lab services including long-range financial plan, annual budgets and operations to achieve system EBIDA targets.
Fosters a culture of internal innovation and entrepreneurship and a “better together” approach to cross-team collaboration.
Launches and sustains an inclusive and supportive working environment.
Maintains relationships with significant vendors/partners.
As necessary, works with Marketing and Communications to represent a positive public image for the large profession.
Collaborates with Government Affairs on establishing a Providence position on any legislative efforts related to clinical laboratory or pathology such as may be issued by the FDA, CMS, or others.
Represents Laboratory /Pathology on Clinical Institutes, CPGs, CDTs and System Governance as appropriate.
Prepares and implements plans for developing and building clinical lab and pathology leadership and other clinical resource across the system.
Leads in pathology contracting discussions across the system.
Chairs System Laboratory Executive Council (desired future state).
Participates as a member in CPS, Institute Advisory Council and System Clinical Council.

Required qualifications and experience for this position include:
Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from an accredited program.
Master’s Degree in Health Care Management or related field.
Coursework/Training in formal management training and experience in Quality Management and Resource Management in healthcare care organizations.
At least ten (10) years of Pathology practice experience in a contracted, employed or academic environment.
Experience in pathology group management, clinical lab management/oversight as a Laboratory Medical Director.
Board certified in AP/CP pathology.
Active membership in one or several national pathology/laboratory organizations such as ASCP, CAP, AACC, AMP.
Ability to manage difficult peer situations arising from medical care review. Willingness to constructively confront specialist providers about needed changes in practice patterns.
Meets all credentialing criteria required for the position.
Management and supervisory skills.
Leadership skills, especially the ability to organize and facilitate meetings and to promote physician leadership development.
Ability to identify and set priorities, consistent with system initiatives and priorities.
Ability to be effective in a matrix organizational structure.
Ability to think strategically and provide physician input into significant strategic system initiatives.
Excellent skills in both verbal and written communication. Experience with teaching/training or education equivalent.
Ability to prioritize/execute multiple complex tasks and to adjust as necessary when the environment changes.
Willingness to accept direction in achievement of an organization’s objectives.
Demonstrated strong working knowledge of medical and business informatics.
Understanding of and commitment to stewardship in both medical management and business reality.
