Providence Health & Services Chief Operating Officer, Providence St. Vincent in Portland, Oregon
The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for the overall operations of the hospital including facility planning, recruitment and retention of staff, supervision of significant clinical services and in the absence of the Chief Executive, direction of the hospital. The Chief Operating Officer reports to the Chief Executive, St. Vincent Medical Center. The Chief Operating Officer works with physician leadership to provide Graduate Medical Education and Hospitalist services.
The Chief Operating Officer is an integral member of the Portland Service Area Executive Team, PSVMC Administrative Team, leads the PSVMC Administrative team, leads the PSVMC operations, Quality Leadership, and is a member of a number of other committees and task forces to improve services both regionally and at PSVMC.
Leading the development and implementation of Providence St Vincent Medical Center's key initiatives and daily operations.
Expansion of PSVMC buildings, parking structures, and remodeling existing facilities to provide for a working environment that promotes excellence in patient care and support services, teaching and research.
Provides for effective and efficient Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency Department and Ambulatory services across the Portland Service Area in a time of increased activity and decreasing revenues.
As part of the leadership team, maintains the excellent reputation of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center by assuring the satisfaction of patients, physicians, and employees.
Creating a work environment that attracts and retains skilled staff and physicians.
Provide coordination between acute care operations and PSA integrated services.
The Chief Operating Officer, Providence St. Vincent will:
Provide direction for the development of short and long-term strategic initiatives for the stable growth and cost-effective operation of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center by providing leadership for hospital operations.
Provide for the development and effective operation of Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency and Ambulatory Services for the Portland Service Area, supervisors and evaluates the Service Area Directors, review strategic initiative and budgets, analyzes operation for cost effectiveness and assures good patient care.
Provide leadership for the Department of Medicine and Graduate Medical programs in collaboration with the Chief Executive and Brill Chair of Medicine.
Provide Direction and oversight to the Hospitalist program.
Chair the PSVMC Operations and Quality Leadership team which is responsible for developing and implementing the critical strategic initiatives for PSVMC.
Participate actively in strategic planning and budgetary formation in conjunction with the Chief Executive, Finance Director and site managers to ensure strong and focused operational and financial management of the acute care business.
Support physician partners by knowing and understanding the medical staff issues and works with the physician in order to provide appropriate operational environment necessary for optimum physician practice. Coordinate medical direction, working closely with program directors of clinical programs to attain prescribed results. Participate as the administrative liaison on the Medical Staff Committees.
Be responsible for coordination or support of regulatory agency compliance readiness and audit checks, as assigned by the Administrator.
Organize and lead Management Forum.
Be responsible for various infrastructure functions as assigned by the Administrator.
Participate in routine employee communication forums to better inform site employees of relevant information concerning Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. Perform as a strong team leader for all Employee Relation’s activities.
Ensure the development of policies and programs that are economically feasible as well as being conducive to the personal and professional development of the PSA and hospital.
Interact with and assist in shaping directions with the various key constituencies of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center patient and community, physicians, Providence Health System in Oregon, competitors and payors.
Provide leadership and vision for PSVMC so as to achieve improvement in value and service, flexibility and innovation of operations, integrated delivery, and partnership with Medical Staff.
Required education/experience for this position include:
Master's Degree in Hospital Management, Business Administration, or related degree; or equivalent educ/experience. (2 years of experience may be substituted for each year of education however the most preferable candidates will have both the education and experience.)
10 or more years of increasingly responsible experience in healthcare and hospital management.
Extensive knowledge of the healthcare industry including the operation of a hospital, extensive knowledge of business practices in healthcare.
Knowledge of the Mission, Core Values, Operating Principles and philosophy of the Providence Health System and how to apply them to daily operations.
Knowledge of financial planning, human resources, marketing, organizational behavior and customer service.
Knowledge of facility planning and maintenance, knowledge of laboratory and pharmacy operations.
Skill in the operation of a personal computer.
Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with executives, managers, physician, employees, patients and visitors.
Ability to successfully lead a team.
Ability to represent PSVMC and the Providence Health System in public settings.
Ability to implement quality improvement methods and ideas.
Ability to use analytical skills to solve complicated problems.
