THE ROLE

The Chief Executive provides operational leadership, management, and direction in a Catholic Sponsored Health System. This position serves as Chief Executive of Providence Portland Medical Center (PPMC) and includes regional leadership to Providence Hood River Medical Center (PHRMC), Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center (PWFMC), Providence Milwaukee Hospital (PMH) and related lines of business. This leader ensures the delivery of high quality, cost-effective health care consistent with Triple Aim and the mission of the Providence Health & Services. The Chief Executive will function as a member of multiple advisory boards and leadership councils which have the responsibility for development, and implementation of an integrated delivery system across the Region. The position is located in Portland, OR.

In this position you will:

  • Serve as a member of the Service Area leadership team working cooperatively with team members on the development and implementation of the integrated delivery system in Oregon and specifically for the Portland Service Area.

  • Provide leadership to the organization to maximize quality, patient safety cost-effectiveness, patient satisfaction and responsiveness.

  • Select and develop executive managers and department leaders who will meet the organization's goals and objectives.

  • Maintain high employee morale and positive relationships with employees and management staff to enhance productivity and the quality of work life in the organization.

  • Maintain positive relationships with the Medical Staff to integrate physicians into decision-making processes and to ensure that physician needs are met.

  • Operate the organization to ensure its financial strength, reviewing results on an ongoing basis and taking corrective action to achieve the annual budget.

  • Participate in the Service Area strategic and annual planning and budgeting processes and develop and implement action plans to ensure the organization achieves its annual objectives. Accountable for accomplishing Service Area and organizational success indicators and objectives, consistent with the strategic plan and Management System.

  • Provide leadership and work collaboratively with program executives, managers and staff to evaluate new opportunities and to develop programs and services that improve the organization's market position and meet community needs.

  • Select and develop managers and department leaders who will meet the organizations goals and objectives.

  • Lead quality improvement activities, utilizing appropriate operational tools and resources such as Six sigma and change management techniques to ensure the organization is in constant improvement model to achieve better delivery of services.

  • Implement standards of service for care, oversee the system for monitoring quality, intervening as appropriate to take corrective action, and ensure accreditation and regulatory guidelines are met.

  • Serve as a member of the Service Area leadership team, providing advice to the Chief Operating Officer, Oregon Region and other team members, and working collaboratively with other team members to eliminate unnecessary organizational redundancy and duplication and to better meet the needs of the community for quality, affordable health care.

  • Represent Providence Portland Medical Center to the communities served in an appropriate manner. Demonstrates positive interactions with the public and positive interpersonal relations in dealing with fellow employees, supervisors, and other department employees to maximize productivity and quality of work life.

  • Provide leadership and/or directs affiliations with other health systems in Portland Service Area. Works closely with the Chief Executives, COO’s, and CNE’s at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, Providence Milwaukie Hospital and Providence Willamette Falls to ensure strategic direction and goals of programs across service lines are met.

  • Provide leadership in integration interests of physicians, physician organizations, other health systems, health plans, hospital and shared services employees that provides an effective and efficient continuum of services to members and patients.

  • Provide support and leadership to the Providence Portland Medical Center Foundation in helping to advance fundraising projects and that targets are met. Develops strong relationships with Foundation Board members and works closely with Executive Director and Chair of the foundation.

Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS

  • A Masters Degree in Health or Hospital Administration, Business Administration or a related field.

  • At least six years of senior level leadership experience in a health care delivery organization. The Chief Executive should have personal values compatible with those of Providence Health & Services and be comfortable leading and administering a Catholic sponsored organization as a healing ministry. In addition to the following:

  • Working knowledge and understanding of the current trends and change taking and implications to Providence Health & Services

  • Evident success in repositioning large organizations in a changing market.

  • Knowledge of the principles of change management and process improvement tools and techniques.
