Providence Security Officer in Milwaukie, Oregon


Providence is calling Security Officers to positions within the Portland Service Area. These are full-time and on call, variable shift positions. Officers will be required to work at different locations and shifts throughout the Portland area, as needed.

Security Officer I or II

We are seeking a Security Officer who will receive general direction from the Security Manager, Supervisor or Lead Security Officer, perform a variety of security protective duties to protect patients, visitors, staff, physicians, property and facilities from accidents, bodily harm, fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry. Enforce PH&S, facility and security policies and regulations. Investigate reports of potential criminal conduct against PH&S staff, visitors, staff, and property; respond and assist in restraining patients; detains individuals when necessary or at the direction of a police officer; and provide protective services to high risk areas. May be required to support any Providence or affiliated organizations within the Oregon Region.

As a Security Officer I you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Patrol facilities and grounds both internally and externally to promote a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, employees, physicians, and volunteers; and for compliance with the parking policies/procedures

  • Secure and unlock building as directed

  • Issue parking citations as necessary

  • Enforce compliance with all laws, rules, regulations and policies governing the hospital and medical center

  • Follow all facility and department policies and procedures

  • Respond to calls for assistance and provides vehicle assistance for patients, visitors and staff as appropriate (jump starts, etc.).

  • Be alert to any hazardous or unsafe conditions while on patrol

  • Correct or refer hazardous conditions to the appropriate personnel for correction, i.e., Maintenance, Environmental Services, and Safety Dept.

  • Respond immediately and appropriately to emergency situations such as, combative or violent people, missing patients, fire alarms, elevator entrapments and other crimes on campus

  • Ensure Behavioral Health patients remain safe in their room as requested by clinical staff

  • Transport/escort medical and Behavioral Health patients to appropriate location throughout the campus

  • Ensure the safety of ED patient by searching and securing weapons or other belongings according to policy guidelines

  • Prepare reports of unusual activities or occurrences

  • Obtain adequate and accurate information based upon the occurrence

  • Make sure Documentation complies with department guidelines with potential to submit reports to other PH&S departments and government agencies

  • Help to ensure effective communication and good relations by providing information to staff, visitors and patients, giving directions within the medical center, and giving general information regarding rules and regulations

  • Maintain and enhances knowledge and personal expertise through the participation in appropriate educational experiences

  • Attend all mandatory in-service programs and meeting

  • Report to work during emergencies and during inclement weather conditions since Security Officers are considered essential staff. Emergency call back may be required and subject to mandatory overtime when required when operationally needed

  • Serve as First responders to any risk for violence situations. Effectively physically restrains patients using appropriate procedures, as necessary

  • Provide for coverage for all department functions as required including transport of patients, visitors, and employees

  • Provide Access Control monitoring at various facilities. Issues temporary ID badges and keys to employees, contractors, students, and visitors as necessary

  • Work with members of other departments to counsel, resolve or investigate safety and security issues

Security Officer II performs all of the duties above as well as:

  • Interact with local law enforcement officials as necessary and follows the “Integrity and Compliance” guidelines for disseminating information to law enforcement

  • Maintain job-specific certifications, educational requirements and attends all mandatory training and meetings

  • Provide excellent internal and external customer service

  • Assist with transportation of patients, visitors, and employees

  • Participate in drills and emergency precautionary demonstrations

  • Direct traffic and pedestrian flow to maintain order at public gatherings

  • Maintain confidential information pursuant to applicable privacy laws


  • Assist with Providence-only needs of PMG clinics, to include patient/visitor/employee transport & security issues

  • Rounding clinics and conducting site surveys, threat assessments and patient standbys as directed

  • Routine vehicle & foot patrols of PMG clinics and response to nuisance/alarm/person of concern calls

  • Secure and unlocks building as directed

  • Special details at PMG clinics: patient threats, threats to Providence, Domestic Violence issues, caregiver safety and PMG clinic events contract security is not available or as directed

  • Serve as First responders to any risk for violence situations

  • Effectively physically restrains patients using appropriate procedures, as necessary

  • PMG location shift coverage on an emergent basis


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Valid driver's license with good driving record

  • State of Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Professional Certification -OR- temporary work permit upon start of work date

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified -OR- obtained within 90 days of hire

  • Experience using personal computer with standard Microsoft applications

  • Must be 21 years of age

Required qualifications for Security Officer II includes all of the above as well as:

  • High School Diploma -OR- GED plus five (5) years of experience in security, law enforcement or military field

  • Associate's Degree Plus three (3) years of experience in security or law enforcement -OR- equivalent educational experience

  • Coursework/Training: Successful completion of one of the following:

  • Certified law enforcement academy, such as corrections, police, reserve or military police or Completion of certified military training.-OR-

  • Healthcare Security Officer Advanced or Supervisor Certification through IAHSS

  • Coursework/Training: Successful completion of five (5) additional FEMA Emergency Management Institute Courses from Security Services Approved Course List.

  • FEMA ICS 100.HCB; ICS 200.HCA; and 700.A certification

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • College coursework/Training:College level coursework in professionally related fields such as criminal justice, social work, psychology or any social science

  • One (1) year Security/law enforcement experience such as corrections, police, reserve and military police

  • Direct patient care experience in a healthcare industry
