We are seeking a Certified Nursing Assistant 2 - Health Unit Coordinator (CNA 2 - HUC) - Senior Psychiatric Unit that will be a key person within the nursing unit who provides overall administrative and technical assistance and support in the operation of the assigned nursing unit; Collaborates with other staff and leaders in the development, oversight and operation of the unit. This position is the hub of all communication to and from the nursing unit and greatly impacts the 'tone' of the unit/shift. The CNA2/HUC duties fall within these main categories:
Performs all clerical duties in support of the nursing unit.
Initiates and prioritizes the accurate processing and transcription of provider orders.
Assembles and maintains patient charts, current forms, results/reports.
Assess, orders, maintains unit supplies and equipment within defined unit budget.
Serves as the hub of all communication for the unit.
Displays professional interpersonal skills and presence when communicating with patients, public and staff.
As the front-line customer service representative, upholds and exhibits the core values in all communications.
In conjunction with the Charge Nurse, is accountable for the efficient coordination of unit activities.
Key elements include patient placement, scheduling, coordination with other departments for patient care services and the effective dissemination and prioritization of information.
Assists with basic patient care for patients and specific delegated duties that support the delivery of quality patient care, under the supervision of an RN.
Competent to interact and gather data from patients of many ages, including neonatal, adolescent and adult.
Competent to observe and report to RN a patient's self-report or behavior.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
HUC portion of position:
Respond promptly and compassionately to patient needs communicated via the intercom system
Assess situation and prioritizes based on severity
Promptly relay needs to the nurse and/or responds to needs within scope of practice
Provide telephone coverage for unit; answers calls promptly and courteously; receives and distributes messages accurately and in a timely manner
Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges
Assess unit activity flow and prioritizes workload appropriately
Coordinate and monitor patient charge system; communicates any recommended changes in inventory levels and/or problems to Assistant Nurse Manager; Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager, in collaboration with Distribution/Materials Management as necessary
Transcribe provider orders in an accurate and timely manner
Perform data and order entry for scheduling patient treatments, diagnostics and related ancillary services
Enter unit charges into the computer and checks accuracy and completeness
Maintain adequate supply of office supplies to ensure efficient, cost effective, systematic operation of department; orders supplies and forms as necessary, within established limitations, and according to established guidelines
Maintain work area in a neat and organized manner according to the approved nursing station organization chart
Disseminate patient, physician and staff information in a timely manner
Represent the unit while interacting with patients, visitors, providers and other departments
Monitor activity on unit to ensure no unauthorized personnel; notifies AHN/CN or Supervisor for intervention as needed
Use, troubleshoot and maintain all office equipment including computers, telephone and intercom systems, pagers, photocopy and fax machines; functions as resource to staff and provides training as needed
Attend and participate in all mandatory staff meeting and other meetings as assigned/requested
Attend all required in-service education programs, and other education programs as requested
Maintain and demonstrates responsibility for self and the effects and results of acts and efforts related to the program and organization
Participate in orienting new staff
Maintain a clean and professional appearance
Demonstrate ability to manage conflict in a positive manner
CNA portion of position:
Use protective equipment and takes appropriate precautions whenever there is potential for contact with blood or body fluids
Provide care appropriate to the age of patients served on the assigned unit(s)
Assist the registered nurse with basic patient care as delegated
Report observations/information regarding patient care/condition to the RN in a timely manner
Access and utilize the computer system as necessary for patient care documentation, or to enter charges
Understand and respect patients' rights
Foster collegial working relationships with the healthcare team
Assist with transportation of patients, supplies, specimens, etc., as requested
Complete other delegated/assigned duties to support patient care such as stocking patient rooms, stocking monitor carts, etc.
Maintain clinical competency in area of specialty and level of practice
Required qualifications for this position includes:
High School Diploma -OR- GED
Coursework/Training: Completion of Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) recognized Acute Care CNA 2 course -OR- Grandfathered to CNA 2 per OSBN requirements
Coursework/Training: Medical terminology course -OR- equivalent education/experience
Active and unencumbered license in the state of Oregon as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification
Experience with a variety of software applications
Preferred qualifications for this position includes:
Coursework/Training: One (1) year of post high school education
Coursework/Training: Satisfactory completion of health unit coordinator coursework -OR- One (1) year experience performing secretarial duties in healthcare
National Certification Health Unit Coordinator
Experience as a preceptor/role model
One (1) year of experience as a CNA 2
