Providence Health & Services Principal BI Developer in Beaverton, Oregon


Providence St. Joseph Health is calling a Principal BI Developer to our location in Redmond, WA; Portland, OR; Beaverton, OR; Seattle, WA or Irvine, CA.

We are seeking a Principal BI Developer to serve as the senior development role in the department accountable for leading the development of data and tooling across the various platforms. They are a Subject Matter Expert on bringing together data fom multiple sources to develop dashboards performance reports, and other process optimization tools focused on transforming and modernizing service delivery and increasing operational throughput.

The role brings extensive experience in connecting structured and unstructured data from multiple data sources, with knowledge of on-prem and cloud-based data development and visualization solutions and tools such as Microsoft PowerBI as well as other industry standard tools such as SQL, SSIS, etc. . The role will regularly lead data projects of high technical complexity, will lead meetings with the dev team and operations stakeholders, evaluate future direction for ETL and data management standards, assist in coordinating the teams workload, serve as a point of escalation for technical issues, and will mentor internal and external analysts and developers.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic oversight for data visualization development efforts in Healthcare Intelligence. Maintain a high level of fluency in data delivery tools and techniques to ensure that the best visualization solutions are being leveraged for information delivery. In collaboration with other HI development efforts, provide guidance that semantic layer development is done in accordance with data visualization requirements. Translate from functional requirements to technical specifications as it relates to data visualization.

  • Work closely with the end user to define requirements, understanding what is needed to answer the business question (which may be different from what is asked). Demonstrate an open willingness to listen and learn clinical or business needs, then develop data visualization solutions of excellent quality (as measured by performance, data integrity, following HI coding standards). These solutions should be intuitive to use and also able to answer a broad set of questions.

  • Design, Model, Develop, and deploy HI data visualization and information delivery solutions utilizing tools including Power BI, Tableau, SAP Business Objects, and other tools as the HI solution set evolves.

  • Demonstrate deep understanding of the technical aspects of applications and integrated tools, as well as client/server and host-based systems and the data visualization implications. Demonstrate deep understanding of all aspects of design, development an testing and best practices of data visualization development.

  • Provide mentorship and guidance across the HI analyst and development team as it relates to the development and implementation of data visualization and information delivery solutions.

  • Communicate and escalate major issues promptly to management, HI leadership, team members, customers as appropriate

  • Resolve production problems and issues through root cause analysis, data investigation, QA and testing.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Services, Public Health, Business Management.

  • 9 years of Relational databases, SQL.

  • 8 years Data Visualization software development/delivery experience.

  • 3 years experience leading agile development team following SRUM framework.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Services, Public Health, Business Management.
